CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Registration is now open for the first Elementary Girls' Geek Day of 2020.

This event will be hosted by St. Anne's-Belfield on Feb. 15. It is free for girls from kindergarten to fourth grade, but registration is required.

Participants can take part in the community event, which is designed to spark an interest in science, technology, engineering and math fields in girls.

They will learn new skills and be able to connect with other STEM programs in the community through a collaborative and hands-on environment.

Girls' Geek Day was created in 2013 by Paula White, a teacher in the Albemarle County Public Schools division.

The first event was held at Crozet Elementary School with 30 girls participating.

Since then, White has worked with Kim Wilkens, the computer science coordinator at StAB and founder of the nonprofit Tech-Girls, and other community organizations and volunteers to put on monthly events during the school year.

During the 2018-19 school year, there were nine Girls' Geek Day events that took place, involving more than 500 participants from more than 30 schools in the area.
