CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- The "Phony Bennett" Twitter account has provided comic relief in some of Virginia basketball's most stressful time, but now the man behind the account is using the platform to give back.

Chris Dembitz, creator of Phony Bennett, teamed up with Locker Room Access this month for the "I Am Phony Bennett" fundraiser, releasing a limited run t-shirt to help raise money for the UVA Children's Hospital Oncology unit for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Dembitz also released a Twitter video announcing the fundraiser, which includes various former Wahoos and childhood cancer survivors saying "I Am Phony Bennett."

The Phony Bennett Twitter account and childhood cancer are forever linked after Dembitz's daughter, Audrey, was born and diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer.

"Audrey's cancer and this account are just tied together for me," Dembitz said, "I mean she was still Stage 4 when I started it and me, I keep saying 'crawling out of the darkness,' like I was trying to find my happy place at that point."

Audrey is cancer free, but those memories have motivated Dembitz to find a way to give back and eventually lead to the "I Am Phony Bennett" campaign with Locker Room Access. The website is selling "I Am Phony Bennett" t-shirts for around $25 with all proceeds going back to the UVA Children's Hospital to support the oncology unit.

"I always keep the gold ribbon on my Twitter avatar, the gold ribbon for children's cancer," Dembitz said, "It's kinda neat to bring it back full circle, and now we're using that as a vehicle to help these other kids that are still in the fight."

Phony Bennett now has more than 19,000 followers and Dembitz says just like anyone else with this kind of platform, he is happy to give back.

"If you have that kind of audience, if you have that kind of platform, then it's a missed opportunity not to do something good," Dembitz said.

Below is a story Dembitz did with CBS19 Sports in 2019 talking about the reasons behind his Twitter account.
