Fundraiser aims to get small seismographs into Virginia schools
LEESBURG, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- There a push to get seismographs in an area school district that has a history of dealing with earthquakes.
The Raspberry Shake is one of the smallest seismographs in existence.
These kinds of instruments measure and record details of earthquakes, but this one can also record the vibrations caused by everyday activities.
The founder of a fundraising campaign says having such devices in schools could be a great hands-on learning experience for middle and high school students.
That's why Tim Bruno in Leesburg says he started a GoFundMe.
His goal is to raise enough money to put Raspberry Shakes in schools across Virginia.
"It's not every day that you get to go through and have a sensor nearby and actually see the vibrations from students changing classes or school buses going by or a dump truck going down the road," said Bruno. "And a lot of students, they want hands-on activities and things that they ca correlate and see what happens."
He aims to pitch his idea to schools once he has purchased the first seismograph and can do a demonstration.
