RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A new feature of an existing traffic alert website and app will let drivers know where they can find electric vehicle charging stations.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says this new feature has been added to the 511 Virginia site and app as of Wednesday.

“Since 2002, VDOT has provided a robust and innovative traveler information resource for the Commonwealth through the 511 Virginia program,” said VDOT Chief of Maintenance and Operations Kevin Gregg. “These upgrades are in keeping with current technology and the needs of the motoring public.”

According to a release, this feature will help drivers locate a station where they can charge their EV when traveling in Virginia.

Drivers just need to enable the "EV Charging Stations" layer on 511 Virginia.

Information that is included in this layer includes charging station by the type of vehicle connector and charger type at given locations.

Drivers will have access to information for each station, including its name, street address, phone number, EV connector types, and EV charging network name.

The release says this location data has been sourced from the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center.
