SCOTTSVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A popular Scottsville restaurant will be temporarily closed as it enters a new chapter. Locals describe the spot as a hidden gem where no one is a stranger.

If you drive down to Scottsville, you might see people taking pictures with a larger-than-life rooster at Lumpkin’s Restaurant. The locals say this town staple is more than just a good place to eat.

“I like to think of Lumpkin's as Cheers; everybody knows your name and you get great food," said Maggy Snoddy, who has lived in Scottsville since the mid-70s.

People in town say Lumpkin’s food tastes like home, no matter where you're from.

The restaurant made itself a town necessity when it debuted in 1970. Since then, it has been serving all-day breakfast to customers who feel more like family.

"We call it the town meeting spot. Everybody knows everybody in town,” said Scottsville resident Debby Hoskin.

The restaurant’s success all started with Virginia Lumpkin, who is also a town favorite.

"Mrs. Lumpkin was kind of like the mother of Scottsville. I mean, just the most wonderful person and her tradition has carried on over the years," said Mike Hoskin, who lived in Scottsville as a child and in his adulthood.

Virginia Lumpkin’s son, Hollis, later took over and upheld the successful eatery.

Fifty-one years and many pancakes later, Lumpkin's is now temporarily closed with new owners on the way. Locals say, although they'll miss the original owners, they're excited that the family spot will keep its classic charm.

Lumpkin's will reopen in early December with new hours of operation.
