WAYNESBORO, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A Virginia animal rehabilitation center is participating in a national project to encourage people to learn about pollinators.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia says the public needs to know more about the wild animals that pollinate native plants, share the importance of these animals’ roles within healthy ecosystems, and take action to protect them.

According to a release, many kinds of animals can act as pollinators, including bees, beetles, flies, moths, butterflies, birds, and bats.

Additionally, 87 of the 128 most important global food crops on which people depend require pollinators to reproduce.

Pollinators are called “keystone species,” which means they help to define entire ecosystems.

The Wildlife Center has joined in the National Pollinator Bingo project, celebrating native plants and their pollinators.

Bingo cards guide participants in selecting native vegetation to plant when it is commercially available.

The game represents all 50 states and Puerto Rico with individual and regionally appropriate cards.

There will be a discussion on this project on Tuesday at 2 p.m. People will be able to learn how to get involved as well as tips for starting their own pollinator garden.
