CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A long-time member of the Charlottesville Fire Department is now the city’s new fire marshal.

On Wednesday, Battalion Chief Joe Phillips was sworn in as the City Fire Marshal and Fire Official.

Phillips joined the CFD in 1999 as a firefighter/medic and has since worked his way up through the ranks to be a fire captain and battalion chief.

He has also been serving in the Fire Marshal’s Office and Community Risk Reduction since 2017.

As the fire marshal, he is responsible for the oversight of the CRR Bureau and the responsibilities of the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Phillips replaces Deputy Chief Joe Powers.

CFD is now beginning a nationwide search for a new Deputy Chief of Community Risk Reduction.
