CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- It's warm outside, which means lots of people might want to get out in the water, but there is a problem. There are too few lifeguards.

“A little less than 30 or so guards less than our normal status,” said Micheal Johnson with the Charlottesville Department of Parks and Recreation.

Lifeguard shortages are a problem around the nation, and in Charlottesville, it's gotten so bad that the city has turned to incentives for recruiting.

“We're offering a $250 sign-on bonus, so if you want to come and work for the city, we'll offer you free training,” said Johnson.

He says it's helped boost numbers but not enough to keep the normal schedule.

“Around this time, we'd be open full blast," said Johnson. "Everything would be a go, but right now, we've opened our outdoor pools for the weekends and we have our indoor facilities going Monday through Friday during the week.”

It's the same issue in Albemarle County, which only has enough lifeguards to open the swimming lakes on the weekends.

However, Johnson says it's not a new problem.

“It's been about two years that we've been down anyway,” he said.

For both the city and county, they say this year is going better than the previous. They're just happy to have all pools and lakes open on the weekends.

“We're so happy that it's back and we're excited," said Johnson. "And we're so excited to bring it to you.”
