GREENE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Greene County Board of Supervisors held a vote on an upscale camping site on Tuesday night.

Both the rezoning and the special use permit were approved by a vote of 3-2.

People lined up to speak in opposition to the project and even against the members of the board.

One person raised concerns about the location being across the street from a school.

Another mentioned traffic concerns, again concerning the school.

Still another person said that it would bring in people from out-of-town and increase an existing drug issue.

One voice that spoke up for the project said it is time for the county and its residents to accept that tourism is the county’s number one product.

During the vote, members o the audience were shouting at the supervisors, calling them "traitors" and yelling "shame."

The 40-acre site on Celt Road is just outside of Stanardsville, and it was once being considered for an amphitheater. That project was rejected and the amphitheater moved to Charlottesville where it is now known as the Ting Pavilion.

Tuesday’s vote changes the zoning for the property to allow the plan from Crimson Rock Capital to move forward.

The board then moved on to a discussion of a special use permit for tourist lodging to allow 144 units on the property, including a restaurant, pool, spa and meeting center.  That permit was approved by a 3-2 vote.
