AFTON, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Governor Glenn Youngkin and First lady Suzanne Youngkin were in Afton on Thursday.

They were presenting the Spirit of Virginia award to the nonprofit Hope's Legacy.

The award is given to service providers who are positively impacting the Commonwealth.

Hope's Legacy rescues and helps horses, like when a horse is left behind by its owner or is in need of therapy.

Virginia is ranked 13th in the country with the most horses, with more than 180,000 of them. That makes up more than $2 billion for the economy.

"It is really wonderful to have this recognition for all of their hard work that our volunteers do and all the work we do of taking care of horses in the Commonwealth of Virginia," said Maya Proulx, the executive director of Hope's Legacy.

The nonprofit is the third organization to receive this award. There are three more that will be getting it later this year.
