ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- An online survey has found that almost all of the respondents say they are familiar with the life and career of a man for whom an area elementary school was named.

As part of the naming review process for Meriweather Lewis Elementary, the Community Advisory Committee launched a survey seeking name suggestions, including keeping the current name of the school.

According to a release, more than 94 percent of people who have responded to the survey have said they know about Meriwether Lewis, an early American explorer and politician.

There have been more than 420 responses to the survey, including more than 200 Albemarle County Public Schools parents and employees, nearly 150 community members and more than 50 students.

Part of the survey asks for suggestions for a name, and the largest number of recommendations has been to keep the current name. Other suggestions have been Ivy and Owensville.

This Wednesday, there will be a community meeting during which the results of the survey will be discussed.

This meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. over Zoom, and people will have a chance to offer their comments and share their thoughts about the history of the school and the results of the survey.

People who would like to speak during the meeting should register by 9 a.m. Wednesday by sending an email to [email protected].

After Wednesday’s meeting, the committee will narrow down the list of recommended names to five and then seek further community input.
