CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The game everyone is loving has made a name for itself in Virginia.

Based on the number of facilities, Charlottesville is the fourth most popular city in the whole state for the game of pickleball.

“It’s a national phenomenon,” said Brandon Mackie, the co-founder of Pickleheads.

Pickleball has picked up among many different age brackets, and for Charlottesville, one local organization has seen an increased interest in it this season.

C'ville Social allows friends and individuals to create their own co-ed sports league, and pickleball is one of the most popular sports right now.

With six new courts at Darden Towe Park, there’s plenty of room for everyone to play.

“We just opened it for the first time this spring season, and I think we already have 60 or 70 teams in the doubles pickleball. So, it’s very easy to learn, very easy to play," said Jeremy Purcell, the League President of C'ville Social. "We play on outdoor courts, so it’s a lot of fun for them to be able to get outdoors and play that sport that they love.”

Doing this has allowed people to grow in the sport and gain a little something extra.

“I think it’s very, very important for people to have an outlet, be social, to let off some steam, you know after work, if they have a rough week at work, or if they just have some other things going on, it’s just a good way to get that release and have some good, competitive fun,” added Purcell.

So, if you’d like to join one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, Charlottesville may be the perfect place to do that.

“It's really easy to learn. Anybody can go out there for the first time, learn the rules for about five minutes, and then even be winning games,” said Mackie.
