CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Both of the large hospitals in the Charlottesville area have been named among the best places to give birth.

Newsweek has released its 2023 list of America’s Top Maternity Hospitals, which ranks facilities for their care of newborns and mothers.

The list includes more than 380 hospitals from across the country, with rankings divided into two performance categories, five ribbons and four ribbons.

The rankings are based on a national survey of more than 10,000 hospital managers and maternity care specialists who are asked to recommend the top maternity hospitals.

It also considers hospital performance data related to maternity care, such as the rate of cesarean births, and patient satisfaction data, such as how a patient rates hospital staff for their communication and responsiveness.

The University of Virginia Health System is among 159 hospitals to receive five ribbons on this ranking. This is the highest ranking possible for this.

Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital is among 225 hospitals that got four ribbons.

The UVA Health System has recently added a clinic focused on maternal mental health issues, during pregnancy and up to one year after childbirth.
