CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- New York is coming to Charlottesville as DMR Adventures prepares to open its production of "Newsies Jr." at the Paramount Theater.

“I think how we tell the story is obviously unique to our production, and I love the way that we are using the Paramount Theater, and building connections with our castmates that will show on stage,” said Macy Stancil, who plays Katherine Plumber in "Newsies Jr."

Based on the 1992 movie, this version of “Newsies” has a lot of familiar songs like “Carrying the Banner” and “Santa Fe,” but these 81 local newsies are telling a story that is relevant now more than ever.

“With the actors and writers guild strikes going on, it definitely parallels that situation and how people should be accommodated for their work,” said Jonah Taylor, who plays Jack Kelly in "Newsies Jr."

With its serious themes, there are still a lot of fun moments throughout the show, like the iconic number “King of New York.”

“There’s a big tap dance break, which is so much fun, and there’s a lot of good energy in the number,” added Stancil.

This story is great for families who want to come together and enjoy an upbeat, funny and entertaining true story.

“'Newsies' discusses more mature topics, while also keeping it kid-friendly,” said Taylor.

Performances of "Newsies Jr." are Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
