ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- After a few years hiatus, Albemarle County High School has reinstated a student resource officer to further school safety measures and connections between students and local police.

This comes after the Albemarle County School Board voted to remove officers back in 2020.

With National Bullying Prevention Month also coming to a close, Albemarle High School Principal Bonham says reinstating the resource officer will help mediate tense situations.

“We have a team of people who address that. Oftentimes, it's counselors, teachers, administrators but also having SROs involved in those conversations can be critical too. They help us get to the bottom of it and hopefully prevent as much as we can,” Bonham said.

The resource officers also provide an extra level of safety for the schools. CNN reports there have been at least 58 school shootings in the United States this year. Having a skilled police officer within the school building can save lives in the event of an active shooter.

“As a county, and as a police department overall, just our training we do for an active shooter where we can get the information throughout the community but also throughout the schools as well," said SRO Jamie Kwiecinski. "And I look forward to getting the opportunity to do that here in the school.”

Kwiecinski is specifically stationed at Lamb Lane, which consists of Albemarle High School, Journey Middle School, and Greer Elementary while another officer will be floating between the other schools in the county.
