UPDATE 5:15 p.m.: The Virginia Department of Transportation reports Rockfish Gap Turnpike has reopened in the area of Critzers Shop Road.

UPDATE 3:15 p.m.: The Albemarle County Department of Fire Rescue says both westbound lanes of Interstate 64 have reopened.

Traffic is still backed up and delays will likely take a while to clear.

The Virginia Department of Forestry and the National Park Service are sending crews to take over leadership of the efforts to control the brush fire.

The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Augusta County Sheriff's Office report parts of Route 250 are closed due to fire suppression efforts.

Rockfish Gap Turnpike is closed from Critzers Shop Road to the city limits of Waynesboro. Afton Mountain Road is also closed in the area of Rockfish Gap Turnpike.

Additionally, the Shenandoah National Park reports Skyline Drive is closed between Loft Mountain at milepost 79.5 to Rockfish Gap at milepost 105.

And the Blue Ridge Tunnel is closed for the rest of Thursday.

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A vehicle fire started a brush fire on Afton Mountain on Thursday.

Westbound Interstate 64 was shut down at mile marker 100 near the Albemarle/Nelson county line due to a vehicle fire around 12:30 p.m.

One lane reopened around 1:40 p.m.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says there is now fire burning on Afton Mountain itself.

The right hand westbound lane remains closed as of 3 p.m. because fire crews are using it to stage equipment to fight the brush fire.

The fire is burning on a steep mountain slope just north of the interstate.

Traffic is backed up for several miles, and drivers are being detoured off the interstate at the Crozet exit, 107.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area if at all possible.

VDOT says the lane closure is expected to remain in place through the afternoon commute, so drivers heading toward the Shenandoah Valley should expect significant delays.

There are also delays and congestion at the Crozet exit due to vehicles trying to get off the interstate.
