CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Typically on a fall Saturday, thousands of fans gather for the Cavaliers, but this weekend it was high school football that brought the crowd to Scott Stadium.

"When I was approached about it, I was like heck yeah. Let's make that happen," Virginia football coach Tony Elliott said.

"Anytime you can go to one of your flagship universities and utilize their first-class facilities, play inside a Power 5, ACC program, that's certainly a lot to get excited about," VHSL Assistant Director for Athletics Chris Robinson said.

For the first time since 2015, UVA hosted the Virginia High School League Class 5 and 6 football championships.

"We always strive to rotate our state events around the states to allow different localities around the state to host," Robinson said. "In this particular case, with the Class 5 and 6 schools, Charlottesville is geographically friendly."

Even without a horse in the race, Monticello High School served as the host team.

"We are in this profession to provide experiences for student athletes and while Monticello is not one of the participating high schools today, it is a great opportunity to be able to offer a championship experience at this level for the schools that are here."

The game also provides the University a chance to show players what it's like to be a Cavalier for a day.

"Some of the teams will be actually taking advantage of the University of Virginia athletic department to schedule some tours of campus and their athletic facilities," Robinson said. "So there's an educational component, but there's also a competitive one to it as well."

"It gives us the opportunity to host and see more high school coaches and more high school players just to let them know what UVA is all about," Elliott said.

And memories that last a lifetime.

"While they might forget the score one day, they aren't going to forget how they felt coming out of the stadium from Scott Stadium."

Both Maury and Freedom High School completed undefeated regular seasons Saturday, winning the Class 5 and 6 state championships, respectively.

The Class 5 and 6 title games will return to Scott Stadium next season.
