LYNCHBURG, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- The Sonia LaMonica era got off to a great start Friday afternoon as the No. 16 Virginia Cavaliers knocked off Liberty 14-6 in their season opener. 

Lehigh transfer Katia Carnevale had quite the debut for the Hoos, leading the team with four goals, while Mackenzie Hoeg tallied her 14th career hat trick in the win. Madison Alaimo and Morgan Schwab each finished with three assists. 

Carnevale opened the scoring five minutes in the a goal, but Liberty answered with four minutes left in the first quarter. Less than a minute later, Addi Foster gave the Hoos the lead again with her first goal of the season.  The Flames brought it as close to 5-3 with 2:25 left in the second quarter, but from there, the Cavaliers scored six unanswered goals to take an 11-3 lead early in the fourth quarter. 

The team return to action on Sunday for their home opener against Stanford at 1 p.m.
