CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Virginia Film Festival will be back for its 37th year.

VAFF announced on Tuesday that this year’s festival will take place Oct. 30 through Nov. 3.

“We are excited to return this year from October 30-November 3 following what was a truly extraordinary 2023 VAFF,” said Virginia Film Festival Director Jody Kielbasa. “From hosting Ava DuVernay and the U.S. premiere of her acclaimed film Origin to director Cord Jefferson, who joined us for his Academy Award-nominated directorial debut American Fiction to Grammy and Oscar-winning recording artist Jon Batiste, who appeared with our Closing Night screening of the moving and powerful documentary American Symphony, it was truly one for the history books and memory banks. We look forward to delivering another outstanding program this fall.”

The 2023 festival featured multiple films that are now nominated for Academy Awards, including Maestro, 20 Days in Mariupol, American Fiction, American Symphony, The Holdovers, Four Daughters, May December, Perfect Days, Robot Dreams, Rustin and The Teachers’ Lounge.

Senior Programmer Ilya Tovbias and other members of the festival team are working now to put together the 2024 program. VAFF has announced that filmmakers can start submitting their work for consideration.

According to a release, all Virginia residents and students at Virginia schools are eligible to have entry fees waived.

For non-Virginia filmmakers, it will cost $30 for features and $10 for shorts if submitted by May 15.

Out-of-state students can submit a film in any category with a 75 percent discount.

By Sept. 17, filmmakers will be notified of their entry status.
