CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS)-- In their first of two midweeks the Virginia Cavaliers outlasted Penn State 6-3. The win marked the 850th of Brian O'Connor's career.

Owen Coady made his first midweek start for the Cavaliers pitching 5 inning while recording 5 Ks. The Penn State transfer was just one out shy of recording his first win. The win was handed to Chase Hungate who came in relief for Coady.

The Cavaliers got to work quickly plating Henry Ford in the bottom of the first thanks to a 2 out RBI single from Casey Saucke. Virginia kept the momentum going in the next frame as Harrison Diddawick led off the inning with a solo homerun into the Virginia bullpen. The solo shot was Diddawick's fourth of the season.

Virginia began pulling away in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a three run rally. Henry Godbout got the inning started with a RBI triple off the wall to notch his second triple of his career. Next Luke Hanson doubled down the left field line to make it a 4-0 ball game. Griff O'Ferrall capped the inning with a RBI single to center field.

Despite the 5 nothing score Penn State would not back down. Instead the Nittany Lion mounted a 3 run rally of their own in the fifth. Penn State finally got to Coady as they sent eight batters to the plate and recorded five hits for three runs. Hungate came in relief for Coady and limited the damages as he struck out the final batter.

Leading 5-3 going into the eighth, O’Ferrall ended the day with some insurance with a single up the middle to score Bobby Whalen. Aidan Teel threw 11 pitches in the ninth in route to his fourth save of the season.

The 6-3 win marked the last of a five game homestretch. Virginia now heads to George Washington, first pitch is at 2:30.
