CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- It's been 50 years since two schools came together to form St. Anne's-Belfield School and the community is celebrating.

St. Anne’s School was originally an Episcopal day boarding school for high school girls. In 1974, it merged with the Belfield School, a coed K-8 school founded by University of Virginia professors.

Dr. Autumn Graves, Head of St. Anne’s-Belfield School, says the school is now more spiritually based, rather than being tied to a specific doctrine.

This weekend, the school is beginning a year-long celebration to acknowledge how both schools re-imagined themselves.

"The school, from its founding, has been a school that has really cared about the whole child, body, mind, heart, and soul. And, that has continued over all those years when it was just a girl’s school and even today," she said.

Graves says the school has been working with a number of UVA professors and alumni on casting its future stance on what the school will be.
