ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- With the biggest race card they have ever had, Foxfield is celebrating the 45th running.

“This is the biggest race card we have ever had, the most horses that we have ever had, I mean we have even built new stables out here to accommodate them,” Marketing and Sales Manager at Foxfield Susan Kriener said.

This year’s Foxfield Spring races brought more horses and roughly 13,000 spectators with the proceeds going towards philanthropic partner Camp Holiday Trails.

Foxfield legend Mariann de Tejeda started these races back in 1977 with the goal of giving back to the community.

“Part of Mariann de Tejeda’s wishes with this property was to have the races and give the proceeds back to charities and Camp Holiday Trails was one of the first charities she gave to,” Kreiner said.

And it’s not a small donation.

“After today’s race we will have given back over $300,000 between Camp Holiday Trail and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville,” Kreiner said.

President of the National Steeplechase Association, Alfred Griffin says that their commitment to giving back doesn't go unnoticed.

“I have been to Foxfield a lot of times. And Foxfield has come a long way especially in the recent past. Not only the racing, but the course is also beautiful and it has irrigation, they have really upped their game. But their involvement with the community is something I am really taken by,” Griffin said.

Today’s seven races features steeplechase races, which Griffin says is very popular in Virginia.

“Virginia is kind of the mecca for steeple chasing. A lot of steeple chasing races, there are seven sanctioned races, they are all point-to-point races in the state,” Griffin said.

Foxfield will be hosting their fall races to support habitat for humanity on October 6th.
