Val Thompson has been working at CBS19 News since 2012. He has done in-depth reporting on issues like public transportation, affordable housing and the local impacts of the war in Afghanistan. He has also focused on political reporting by doing long-form interviews with dozens of local candidates and contributing to two televised Congressional debates.

Val never misses an opportunity to pick peaches in Crozet, and he considers them nature's perfect food. He also enjoys canoeing on the Rivanna River, camping in Shenandoah National Park and looking at the stars and planets from UVA's McCormick Observatory. He's also on a never-ending quest to determine who makes the best donuts in town.

Val graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in 2006. Before joining CBS19 News, he worked as a news writer at WGN-TV in Chicago, a news anchor at WHSV in Harrisonburg, Va., and a reporter at KTVX in Salt Lake City, Ut.
