Tara anchors the CBS19 News at 5, 6, & 11.
Tara Wheeler started her journalism career at CBS19 in Charlottesville back in 2010 and, after spending three years anchoring the morning news in Roanoke, couldn't resist the pull back to beautiful Central Virginia. An AP Award-winning anchor, you can catch her anchoring the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. UVA sports fans may also recognize Tara as the Hoo-Vision host for home football and men's basketball games (Go Hoos!), a position she's proudly held for 5 seasons (keep an eye out for her blonde, curly-haired 4-year-old son on the sidelines!).
In her free time, Tara enjoys playing ice hockey, volunteering in the community for organizations such as Our Community Salutes and the Heart Ball, and is also a dance fitness instructor at ACAC.
A graduate of Penn State University with a degree in journalism, Tara was also the starting goalie for the Penn State women's ice hockey team. Half of her education was paid for through the Air Force ROTC program. She served in the Air Force reserves until 2006. The other half of her education was paid for by the Miss America Organization. Tara was crowned Miss Virginia 2008, and was a Quality of Life finalist at the 2009 Miss America pageant. She believes that "Beauty is as Beauty Does" and used her title to raise more than $50,000 for pediatric cancer research when she partnered with the St. Baldrick's Foundation and shaved her head BALD in solidarity with the children fighting the disease.
Tara loves getting out and about with her family to enjoy all that Charlottesville and the surrounding areas have to offer, but her favorite view of Charlottesville is from the air with her husband, Tyler, who is a pilot! They are excited to add another little one to their brood early this Fall.
If you see them around town, be sure to say "Hi!"
