Huge solar farm to open soon in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Orange County will soon be getting its first solar farm.

The farmland off Route 20 in the eastern area of the county will be home to 400 acres of solar panels.

This the first large scale solar farm in the county with a start date of 2020.

The Locust Grove location has been under review by the county, state, and the federal government.

Jim Crozier, the Fourth District representative on the Orange County Board of Supervisors, says it's a big development for the county.

"We worked really hard to work with the developers to make it basically a zero impact project on the county and on the citizens especially with the tax base," he said.

Crozier also says the bulk of the energy will go out of town.

"This power is going to head up toward Northern Virginia and farther up the East Coast and we would hope any future projects we may be able to keep some of that power locally," he said.

According to the California-based company building the solar farm, it will have the capacity to power 10,000 single family homes.

It expects construction on the site to start later this year.
