Teen talks about seventh year of self-started school supplies charity

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- A school supplies charity started by a nine-year-old is entering its seventh year.

Now 16-year-old Lucia Hoerr is a rising junior at St. Anne's-Belfield School and founder of Backpack Buddies.

The 501(c)3 nonprofit donates backpacks filled with school supplies to underprivileged students in Charlottesville, Albemarle County and the surrounding counties.

Hoerr said she began the charity in 2010 after learning not all kids were able to afford supplies.

In its first year, Backpack Buddies filled 61 backpacks and has now filled more than 1,000 backpacks to date.

"I could not have imagined seven years ago what Backpack Buddies would have become but it's amazing," said Hoerr. "If you have an idea, even if you're young and you don't think that you're able to do something or start your own business or start a nonprofit, there's really endless possibilities."

Backpack Buddies will accept donations until Aug. 16.

With 501(c)3 status, all donations are tax deductible.
