ACAC makes big donation to Focused Ultrasound Foundation

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- ACAC Fitness and Wellness Centers raised close to $100,000 for charity during its "Get Fit and Give Back" event in March.

The event happens twice a year when ACAC offers 30-day memberships for $30. All the proceeds go to charity, and this time, the Focused Ultrasound Foundation was the chosen beneficiary.

Focused ultrasound is a medical technology that is used to treat dozens of ailments including some types of cancer without surgery.

ACAC owner Phil Wendel and Focused Ultrasound Foundation founder Neal Kassell said the fundraiser increased awareness of the technology.

"There are a lot of people now in Baltimore and Philadelphia that are aware of this emerging technology," said Wendel.

"It's almost overwhelming," said Kassell, a neurosurgeon. "It's so far beyond what we expected not only in terms of the dollars but in terms of the awareness that this has built among the [ACAC] membership and potential new members."

The money was raised at ACAC's 12 locations in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
