ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The National Click It or Ticket Campaign is underway, and the Albemarle County Police Department is one of the local agencies participating.
The campaign aims to remind and encourage people to wear their seat belt.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says more than 10,000 people who were killed in passenger vehicle crashes in 2017 were not buckled in.
It also says seat belts saved the lives of almost 15,000 people that year.
In 2018, there were ten traffic fatalities in Albemarle County, four of whom where not wearing seat belts.
And of the 2,163 crashes that occurred in the county, 58 of the people who were hurt were not secured.
ACPD will have officers dedicated solely to traffic and seat belt enforcement during the campaign, which runs through June 2, along with regularly scheduled patrols.
This has been made possible by grants from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
