Graduation balloons donated to UVA Children's Hospital

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- More than 1,000 balloons were collected from University of Virginia graduates during Final Exercises on Saturday morning and donated to patients at UVA Children's Hospital.

A group of volunteers passed out the balloons to children, including UVA President Jim Ryan.

Matt Weber, a senior special assistant to the president, said the idea came up during a meeting last week.

He hopes the cause can help put a smile on the faces of children who are in the hospital.

"I think it's really special for kids to get balloons. Balloons bring joy to most folks," said Weber. "The fact that repurposed balloons from a morning graduation at UVA can bring joy to kids a couple of feet down the road is really a totally great opportunity."

Weber said this year's event was a success. He hopes they can do the balloon donations again next year.
