CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Weight loss surgery can be a tough process to go through, so the Bariatric Care Center at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital has made that process a little easier by supplying patients with the tools they need right at their fingertips.
“Sirloin steak, half a sweet potato, one cup of green beans.”
The Baritastic app launched in July, and it allows users to simply push a button and speak what they eat into their phones to track their meals as well as other weight loss goals.
“Most patients need at least six months of medically supervised weight loss before they can have surgery, so the app from start to finish helps them track their progress, not only with nutrition but also with their insurance requirements,” said Kelli Hughes, a clinical dietitian at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.
The Baritastic app uses the nutritional and exercise data to present averages that patients can talk through with their bariatric care physician to help them stay on track during the program.
“Even more than looking at one day at a time, we can look at weeks at a time, or a month at a time and see how that’s all coming out in the wash, and we can look at ok we need to cut the carbs, we need to increase the protein and we can set really specific goals to making that happen,” said Hughes.
Tracking meals and exercise while also making sure to meet insurance requirements can be tedious tasks during weight loss programs, but Hughes says that patients love how easy and fun the app is to use while keeping them accountable.
