Belk makes Habitat donation ahead of UVA's bowl game

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A local family has a big reason to celebrate the new year thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville and the Belk department store chain.

In honor of the University of Virginia's football team playing in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, Belk donated $165,000 to the local Habitat chapter and is flying Holly Wood, her husband Damon and their three children to Charlotte for the game.

Wood and her family lived for years in a house without heating or safe drinking water. After spending much of the past year putting in long hours on construction, the family will be moving into a new Habitat-built house in the Lochlyn Hill neighborhood this spring.

The local Habitat chapter's Chief Advancement Officer Ruth Stone says Belk's big donation helps the nonprofit accomplish its goal of providing quality affordable housing, and it rewards the family's hard work.

"The dream is about to come true," Stone said. "This has been a long process for them, but they've done it with such enthusiasm and grace."
