CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- The man who is leading the effort to remove Vice-Mayor Wes Bellamy from the Charlottesville City Council was arrested over the weekend for allegedly punching someone in the face.
The Charlottesville Police Department says the assault happened around 11 a.m. Sunday between blogger Jason Kessler and another man.
Kessler says he was on the Downtown Mall getting signatures for his petition to remove Bellamy from office.
Police say that is when a man told Kessler he did not like what was on the clipboard and called him a name. Police say in response, Kessler punched the man.
Kessler admits that he punched the man, but said it was in self-defense because the man was acting aggressively.
Right now, Kessler is the only person charged in the incident. But he says he is filing his own assault charges against the man.
