Candidate holds meet-and-greet in Greene County

GREENE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A candidate for Virginia's 24th Senate District held a meet-and-greet at the Greene County library on Saturday.

Madison County resident Annette Hyde is running for the seat as a Democrat. The 24th Senate District includes Greene, Madison, and Culpeper counties.

Republican Emmett Hanger currently holds the seat and is being challenged for the Republican nomination by Culpeper County resident Tina Freitas.

Hyde, a yoga instructor, says she decided to run after the 2016 presidential election because she is concerned about the future of special education services in public schools under the Trump administration.

"I have an older son that has bipolar disorder,” Hyde said. “He was diagnosed at age eight, and if it wasn't for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, my son wouldn't have gotten the services and the education that he deserved."

She said she will also focus on improving access to high-speed Internet in rural areas.
