FLUVANNA COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Caring for Creatures is an animal rescue, celebrating 30 years of serving pets and families from all over Central Virginia.
Mary Birkholz moved to Fluvanna County in the 1980s to live her dream of helping dogs and cats that had nowhere else to go. She created the first no-kill facility in Central Virginia.
"Our overall goal is to find loving homes for these animals," said Birkholz. "We work really hard to match our animals to the perfect environment and humans."
If an animal is not selected for adoption, Birkholz says they have a place to stay for life at Caring for Creatures.
The pet sanctuary also has ways the community can be involved, even if not everyone takes one of the more than 200 animals home.
"One of the more obvious is financial gifts," said Birkholz. "That helps us get medical care, supply needed staff, and any number of items. You can volunteer. We have many volunteers, and our philosophy is our volunteers enhance what we do, and what our staff does."
Caring for Creatures is celebrating its 30th anniversary by offering cats and senior dogs for a special adoption fee.
