CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- High school students preparing to take the next step in their military career were recognized.

The second annual Our Community Salutes recognition ceremony was held at Lane Auditorium on Saturday.

The recruits are students from all over Central Virginia, and they took an oath of enlistment depending on the branch of service in which they were planning to enlist.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says this is an easy way to show support.

"We as Americans need to do a better job of recognizing the men and women who already serve, but those who are about to service," said John Newby II, commissioner. "This is a signal to all of our young people that service is honorable and its needed support of our country."

The music was played by the 380th Army Band, and presentation of colors was put on by cadets from Fork Union Military Academy.
