Charges pending in fatal Nelson County crash

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Virginia State Police says an investigation is ongoing into a fatal crash in Nelson County and charges are pending.

According to police, the crash occurred Monday around 1:05 p.m. on Oak Ridge Road, about a mile west of Diggs Mountain Road.

Police say an Acura Integra heading west on Oak Ridge Road ran off the right side of the road, over-corrected and crossed the center line.

The driver, identified as 22-year-old Zachary W. Debilzan of Amherst over-corrected again, running off the right side of the road a second time.

Then the Acura hit an embankment and a tree, spun around and overturned.

Debilzan suffered minor injuries in the crash.

However, two passengers, both teenage girls, were taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment.

A 16-year-old girl from Nelson County died of injuries she sustained in the crash on Monday evening.

The 18-year-old woman from Shipman remains in the hospital where she is being treated for serious injuries.

Police say none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
