CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- Anyone riding the bus on Friday was in for a pleasant surprise, because Charlottesville Area Transit was letting everyone ride the bus for free.

The free rides were part of "Clean Commute Day," aimed at helping people find more eco-friendly ways to get to work or around town.

In honor of the day, CAT teamed up with Jaunt and RideShare to encourage clean commutes.

CAT says one way to commute cleanly is ride the bus. So CAT decided offering free bus rides on Friday was one way to get people on board with the idea of a green commute.

CAT adds that riding the bus has more than just an eco-friendly impact.

"Public transportation has the opportunity to reduce some of the road congestion out there and really give people a means to go where they need to without polluting as much or burning as much fuel," said Westley Kerns from CAT.

The free bus rides lasted until the end of the night.
