Charlottesville Restaurant Week kicks off

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- More than 30 restaurants will be participating in Charlottesville's Restaurant Week.

Reid Dougherty, one of the general managers of Brassiere Saison, believes the summertime week is more fun, even though the culinary week takes place twice a year.

"It brings in a lot of people looking to have a good time and people on vacation coming into town," said Dougherty. "People from the counties come into the city. It really invigorates the whole downtown area and the city itself."

For Magione's on Main, this is its first year participating and it is looking to leave a lasting impression on customers.

"We're just trying to bond with the community and get our name out there a little bit so when people think of great Italian, they'll come to Magione's on Main," said Robert Crinks, the owner of the restaurant.

Only certain meals at the participating restaurants during restaurant week are part of the event.

One dollar from each of those meals will be donated to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

More than $35,000 has been donated to the food bank each year from C-Ville Restaurant Week.

Crinks says being able to help the food bank is tremendous.

"It doesn't take a lot to feed someone every day, which I know really goes a long way in helping everyone out," said Crinks.

Dougherty agrees, saying it's great knowing how many meals are being sold so they can know how much they are helping those in need.

"We can see the dollar amounts, we know how much that helps them," said Dougherty. "We know how much every dollar contributes to being able to feed someone who needs it and for us that is very satisfying to know exactly how much our contributions is helping everyone in need."

While food lovers are contributing to a great cause, he hopes they are a great experience no matter where they decide to have a meal.

"I really hope people are able to see Charlottesville as a newly invigorated, revitalized place, especially the Downtown Mall," said Dougherty. "This is a really fun place to be no matter which restaurant you go to, you're going to get a great meal and contribute to a really great cause."

Restaurant week lasts until July 20.
