CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Charlottesville schools and businesses all throughout the city showed their love for teachers on National Teachers Appreciation Day. From thank you letters to gifts and food deals, teachers were really feeling the love on Tuesday.
As a way of showing that appreciation, the Burnley-Moran Elementary Parent Teachers Organization completely renovated the staff lounge.
Members asked staff members exactly what they were looking for in a lounge.
Brittney Mawyer, a kindergarten Instructional Assistant, says the old lounge was a lot darker and it didn't feel like a place you would want to hang out.
The PTO enlisted help from parents who are architects, designers, carpenters and electricians to donate their time and energy to the project.
The entire project took about one week and cost less than $1,500.
For Mawyer, all she wanted was a place where she could unwind for a bit.
"It's nice and bright, and open and airy now and I think it's more calming and we need calming, especially in the classroom," she said.
It wasn't only local schools showing their appreciation. Food chains such as Zaxby's offered special deals for teachers.
For all of Tuesday, if teachers bought a big Zak snack, they got one free.
Zaxby's ownership likes to be involved in the community.
For Neal Lobban, general manager of Zaxby's in Charlottesville, it feels great to know that his company has done something to give back to teachers in the area.
Other food chains in Central Virginia participated in Teacher Appreciation Day as well, including Arby's, Chipotle, McDonald's, Chick-fil-A and many more.
