City council candidate pushes for public transportation improvements

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Independent Charlottesville City Council candidate Paul Long is using his campaign to once again shine a spotlight on public transportation. Long said the city would benefit from increasing the number of buses.

"I have been talking for the past ten years about improving the public transit system," Long said. "I would like to see the buses running every twenty minutes instead of every hour."

This is Long's fourth time running for the city council.

Long said Charlottesville residents who have cars also need to play a role in expanding the city's transit system.

"We have to convince some of the people that drive around to start using public transportation at least some of the time," he said.

Long also wants to change Charlottesville to a "strong mayor" form of government, in which voters would directly elect the mayor and the mayor would have the responsibilities currently held by the city manager.
