Community supports food truck after burglary

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19NEWS) -- Angelic Jenkins, the owner of the food truck Angelic’s Kitchen on Pantops, was busy getting ready to serve lunch in the morning when her husband broke the news that her generator, which is essential for the truck to run, was stolen.

"I was in tears almost today because I had advertised that we were going to be open for business today,” said Jenkins. “And so I went on Facebook to notify the communities, ‘sorry guys we were robbed. Someone stole our generator, unfortunately, we are not able to open today.’"

Her generator was taken out of a locked box connected to her food truck. Several other items were taken too. Marks of a crowbar can be seen around the latch to the box. Jenkins said she can't imagine why someone targeted her to steal from.

"The first thing I thought is we're so nice to everyone and we give so much of our energy,” said Jenkins. "Why would someone want to steal from us?”

Jenkins and her husband called the police, but they had to buy a new generator. Jenkins said between losing the generator and today's sales she lost about $2,000. The police have no updates on who it must have been.

"It's a pretty expensive generator and it's huge,” said Jenkins. “It took more than one person to move that generator. So it had to be multiple people. At least two people."

Jenkins said as soon as she announced that they could not open because of the robbery, support began to flood in. Charlottesville 29, a publication for Charlottesville restaurants, started a GoFundMe to help make up for the loss.

"I get emotional when I talk about this because I told my husband today I didn't realize that many people notice, or that many people cared. And they do,” said Jenkins.

Her friends have made a point to tell as many people as they can to come to show support Saturday when they open back up with a new generator.

"Sometimes when bad things happen to you, good things start to flow in. So I really think that has happened today," said Jenkins.

Angelic's Kitchen will be open tomorrow from 11:30 AM to 7 PM tomorrow.
