Community cleanup events seek volunteers for Earth Day

WASHINGTON (CBS19 NEWS) -- Earth Day is coming up, and there are more than 3,000 cleanup events scheduled for communities across the United States.

The Earth Day Network has implemented a nationally-coordinated environmental volunteer cleanup to mark Earth Day 2019 along with several partners, including National CleanUp Day and Keep American Beautiful.

People in communities across the country are being encouraged to celebrate Earth Day by getting up and getting out.

Volunteers are working with grassroots organizations to clean up green spaces, urban landscapes, and waterways throughout the month of April, to reduce plastic pollutions and waste.

Then for the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2020, best practices and metrics from 2019 will be scaled up for the Great Global Cleanup, which will feature more than 100,000 events around the world that aim to collect a billion pieces of trash.

Volunteer registration is open events in more than 80 locations across the U.S. Earth Day is April 22.
