RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A registered sex offender has been sentenced to prison for possessing child pornography.

According to a release, 50-year-old Timothy Alan Lewis of Richmond pleaded guilty on Monday to six counts of possession of child pornography.

He was sentenced to eight years and six months of active imprisonment with another 21 years and six months suspended.

Attorney General Mark Herring announced the sentence Monday.

"With this strong sentence, another dangerous predator is off our streets and will not be able to harm our children," said Herring. "Sick individuals who sexually exploit children through the distribution and ownership of child pornography should know that they will be brought to justice. My office will continue to work with local law enforcement to take individuals who would harm children out of our communities."

Lewis had previously been convicted in Maine for sexually assaulting a child.

Evidence presented in court showed the Richmond Police Department identified him after receiving a complaint about him possession the child pornography on his computer.

When investigators went to his home, Lewis admitted to searching for and saving such material.

Lewis' electronics were seized as part of a search warrant, and an examination found images of child pornography, Internet search terms for it, and videos of his neighbor's children playing in their front yard.
