Council meets to discuss Police CRB issues

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Charlottesville City Council met Tuesday afternoon to discuss several issues relating to the Police Civilian Review Board.

Among the issues discussed: whether the CRB will get involved with complaints only at the appeal level, once a police internal investigation is complete, or whether the board will conduct a parallel investigation.

If the Charlottesville Police Department is “slow-walking” an investigation, the CRB wants the right to commence a parallel investigation.

Charlottesville Police Chief RaShall Brackney spoke during the meeting, telling the council the CPD did have a backlog of unresolved complaints when she arrived, but that she ordered an audit of those complaints.

She said the department now has a better system for processing them in a timely manner and it also has a compliance team to make sure the department is following its own policies.

The CRB will meet Tuesday evening.
