CULPEPER, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Road crews are getting ready for a winter storm is expected to impact the area Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says some parts of the Commonwealth could see heavy snow while others may be a combination of sleet and freezing rain.
Residents are advised to monitor their local weather and prepare for the storm now.
VDOT expects roads conditions will be hazardous during the storm and urges everyone to stay off the roads if at all possible.
People who do have to be out should reduce their speed and increase following distance.
Brine is being applied to highways and primary roadways beginning Monday and other snow-removal equipment is being prepared.
VDOT says once the snow begins to fall, plows will spread a mix of sand and salt to help improve traction and melt the precipitation.
Once accumulation is about two inches, the plows will begin to push the snow and slush off the roads.
