CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A local program that trains people to drive public transit buses has been honored by a state organization.

The Virginia Transit Association selected the Charlottesville Area Transit's Growing Opportunities Driver program for the 2019 Outstanding Community Program Award.

This award honors GO Driver for its excellence in community outreach, training and recruitment.

"We are thrilled to recognize transit systems and individuals from across the Commonwealth for going the extra mile to improve public transportation for all Virginians," said Lisa Guthrie, the executive director of the VTA.

CAT launched the GO Driver program in 2014 to prepare city residents for careers as Relief Transit Operators.

It's a six-week program that equips participants with a Class B Commercial Driver's License Learners Permit, Passenger Safety and Security Certification, American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certification, and customer service and workplace essential skills.

It was developed in collaboration with the Charlottesville Office of Economic Development and the Downtown Job Center.

The program is free for eligible participants.
