CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A local attorney will challenge State Senator Creigh Deeds for the 25th Senate District seat in November.

Elliott Harding said he received confirmation from the state Board of Elections this week that his application signatures were accepted. He will appear on the ballot as an independent.

The 25th district includes Charlottesville, Nelson County and most of Albemarle County.

Harding is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the former chair of the Albemarle County Republican Committee.

Deeds, a Democrat, has served in the Virginia General Assembly since 1991.

Harding said he plans to hold an official campaign launch later this month.
