Hickey runs for seat in Virginia House

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A former attorney and teacher has decided to run for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Tim Hickey is running as a Democrat for the 59th District seat, which includes all of Buckingham and Appomattox counties as well as parts of Albemarle, Campbell and Nelson counties. He lives in Albemarle County.

“For all of our difference, I find that people across our district generally have the same concerns,” he said. “They want to be able to provide for their families and live in clean, safe communities.”

Hickey says he will focus on expanding broadband Internet and investing in education and workforce development, which he says are key to economic growth in the district.

He says Internet has become necessary to allow people to search for jobs, start businesses, do homework for school and more.

He adds education and workforce development will also give people opportunities and encourage investment in the area.

And then there is early voting, which Hickey says he wants to expand.

“No-excuse early voting would allow people to head to the polls a week or two early when it's convenient for them,” he said. “For instance, I work during the week and have kids, so I'd much rather vote on a Saturday. Providing opportunities to participate in democracy for folks who are busy working or taking care of family is a good thing for our country and our Commonwealth.”

The race for the 59th District will take place in 2019.
