How to be energy efficient with keeping your home cool

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- With the continuing stretch of hot temperatures, it's important to make sure air conditioning units are operating correctly to help beat the heat.

Albemarle Heating and Air says the best way to make sure the air conditioning unit is in tip-top shape is to regularly change the filter.

General Manager Ralph Sachs says the company has been "extremely busy" the last several weeks as temperatures continue to hang around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Other than changing the filters, he says to try and keep the thermostat from dealing with major fluctuations.

When asked whether it's better to leave the unit on all day or turn it off when the resident is not at home, he answered "think of your air conditioning unit like your car."

"Where do you get better gas mileage? The stop and go traffic in the city or on the highway," he asked. "It's always on the highway, same thing with an air conditioner."

Sachs added, "the energy it takes to start that compressor, that initial start-up will be more than if it's running on a continual basis, so it costs less to keep it running."

Another easy tip is to keep the blinds down to limit the amount of sun getting into the rooms.

Sachs summed it all up with "the longer [the AC] runs, the more moisture it pulls out of the air, lowering the humidity inside."
