Hundreds of early-risers fill Charlotteville's new Wegmans during grand opening

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- Hundreds of early-risers filled Charlotteville's new Wegmans during the grand opening on Sunday.

Many Charlottesville-area residents said the countdown for the Nov. 6 Wegmans store opening was long, but worth the wait.

The scene at the opening was comparable to 'Black Friday,' as lines poured out of the building on two ends by 6 a.m.

The Albemarle County Police Department expected between 20,000 and 30,000 people at the store opening and were on hand directing traffic to help with the fanfare.

The Charlottesville store located at 100 Wegmans Way is the company's 92nd store location and forth store opened during its 100-year anniversary.

The grocery store opened following tradition by filling the entry-way with as many customers as possible, who harmonized the Wegmans cheer along with store employees.

Though hundreds filled the store, one couple in particular stood out, the Millers.

Debra Miller's son is a chef in charge of the hot food counter at Wegman's. She and her husband drove down to Charlottesville from Pennsylvania to celebrate along with him.

"We got here ten minutes after 6 a.m." said Miller. "There was already a line."

Miller says she has never experienced a grand opening quite like Wegmans.

"It's been really neat, we've been pumped," said Miller. "They've got anything and everything that you'd need."

The Millers weren't the only people pumped early in the morning.

"It's absolutely wonderful, I've been waiting for a long time," said Jenny Semmes. "I read about Wegmans in the Wall Street Journals quite a few years ago."

As shoppers flooded through the building, hundreds of employees stood by waiting to help. Few people were as excited as the employees and management.

"It's tremendous, when you're doing the Wegmans energy, you're thinking of your careers, you're thinking of Mr. Wegman who founded the company, all the way up to the current leadership and the family," said Chris Depumpo, Wegmans Store Manager. "The impression we want to leave first day, second day and forever is incredible customer service and incredible quality of product."

Wegmans store hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 a.m seven days a week.
